  1. Matter 7-5.1 Recognize that matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms. 7-5.2 Classify matter as element, compound, or mixture on the basis of its composition

  2. HUSTLE • Science Books • Read Pages 441- 442 • Answer Blue Questions

  3. HUSTLE • Science Books • Read Pages 442- 443 • Answer Blue Questions

  4. HUSTLE • Science Books • Read Pages 443- 445 • What is Volume? • What is Volume of Displacement

  5. HUSTLE • What is Matter? • What is Mass • What is weight? • What is an Atom? • What is a Molecule? • What is a compound? • What is a mixture?

  6. What is Matter • Has Mass • Takes up space • matter is made up of particles too small to be seen. Can you tell me what those particles are called?

  7. Atoms • A single atom has mass and takes up space. • Atomsare the smallest part of an element that has the chemical properties of the element. • Molecules are two or more atoms bond together.

  8. Matter • Matter can be classified on the basis of its composition. What is Composition?

  9. 3 Types of Matter- Solid, Liquid, and gas.

  10. Elements • Elementsare pure substances that cannot be changed into simpler substances. • Elements are composed of one kind of atom.

  11. Compounds • Compoundsare pure substances that are composed of two or more types of elements that are chemically combined. • Compounds can only be changed into simpler substances called elements by chemical changes. • One way that two or more atoms can combine is to form a molecule.

  12. Mixtures • Mixturesare composed of two or more different substances that retain their own individual properties and are combined physically (mixed together). • Mixtures can be separated by physical means (filtration, sifting, or evaporation).

  13. More on Mixtures • Mixtures may be heterogeneous or homogeneous. • In a heterogeneous mixture, which is not uniform throughout, the component substances can be visibly distinguished. • More examples: tossed salad or a toy box that holds both dolls and superhero action figures.

  14. Mixtures • In a homogeneous mixture, which is uniform throughout, the substances are evenly mixed and cannot be visibly distinguished. The particles of the substances are so small that they cannot be easily seen. Another name for a homogeneous mixture is a solution.
