BIS and SMP activities during LS1 TE-MPE LS1 WorkshopS. Gabourinon behalf of TE-MPE-EP
– BIS and SMP : Change CPU Modules in VME systems (#11115, #11117 and #11119) • Description of the activity • For all VME systems, replace the RIO3 modules (LynxOS) by the MEN-A20 modules (Linux). The latter are supplied by BE/CO • The VHDL firmware of the VME boards needs to be adapted to the MEN-A20 • The FESA class has to be adapted • The VME systems crates are • BIC installed around the LHC ring, in the Injection and Extraction regions and in the SPS ring (~40 front-ends have to be upgraded) • SMP controllers installed in the CCR (2 front-ends) SMP
– BIS and SMP : Change CPU Modules in VME systems (#11115, #11117 and #11119) • Why during LS1? • LynxOS power PC are no longer supported by BE/CO • Risks / impact if not during LS1 • Not enough spare to replace faulty RIO3 modules in operation • No support if any malfunction → Loss of monitoring • Time period • Before August 2013 • 2 weeks for installation (4 CPU / day) • Manpower • Stéphane to replace the modules in the alcoves and check if the monitoring works • Contribution of MS section to adapt the FESA class • Contributions from the other groups • The MEN-A20 boards are provided by BE/CO group. • Potential showstoppers • Delay for supplying the MEN-A20 from BE/CO
– BIS : Install fiber optic monitoring for the Beam Permit Loops (#11124) • Description of the activity • Monitor the optical signals, and anticipate false dumps due to a decreasing of the optical budget • The prototype module will be installed on spare fibers (1 or 2) • Several configurations can be implemented for monitoring (Raspberry PC, Python interface…) • Why during LS1? • Some fibers optic show an important attenuation of optical budget since their installation • Risks / impact if not during LS1 • Beam permit not correctly transmitted on the BIS loops → False Beam Dump • Time period • Before August 2013 • 1 day for the installation • Manpower • Jonathan and Spyros (and MS?) • Contributions from the other groups • None • Potential showstoppers • None
– BIS : Replace the CIBF units (#11125) • Description of the activity • Upgrading of the CIBF units. They are mainly used for the SPS Extraction / LHC Injection User Permits (Experiments and LBDS links). In total 38 pairs of CIBF are in operation • At least the CIBT board (used for monitor and test the CIBF) needs an upgrade. • Why during LS1? • Lack of monitoring • Not possible to remotely measure the optical power • Obsolescence of the components • Risks / impact if not during LS1 • Diagnostics issues → Loss of availability • CIBF spare limited (due to obsolescence) • Time period • Before Feb 2014 • Manpower • Stéphane • Contribution of MS (FESA and Java GUI follow-up) Optical link CIBFu CIBFc User system
– BIS : Replace the CIBF units (#11125) • Contributions from the other groups • None • Potential showstoppers • Depending on the design study, there will be more impact on existing cards → Design a new CIBTand potentially a new CIBM User system CIBU Optical link CIBFu CIBFc User system
– BIS : Deploy a BIS for Linac4 (#11123) • Description of the activity • 3 BICsand about 25 CIBUlinks have to be installed and commissioned. • Why during LS1? • The installation has to follow the Linac4 schedule • Risks / impact if not during LS1 • Stop the progress of Linac4 project • Time period • Before August 2013 • Manpower • Christophe, Stéphane and Nicolas • MS: Instantiate FESA and BIS GUI for new FECs • Contributions from the other groups • All L4 equipment systems connected to the BIS • Potential showstoppers • The Linac4 planning
– BIS : Move a BIC from UJ56 to USC55 (#11126) • Description of the activity • A Beam Interlock Controller needs to be moved from UJ56 to USC55 • Why during LS1? • Radiation issue • Risks / impact if not during LS1 • R2E problems after LS1 • Time period • Before August 2013 • Few days • Manpower • Christophe and Nicolas • Contributions from the other groups • EN/EL to install fibers in USC55 • Potential showstoppers • None
– BIS : Re-commission CIBU users who will make change during LS1 (#11126) • Description of the activity • If a change has been made during LS1 on the users side, the concerned connection with the BIS must be re-commissioned. • Why during LS1? • The commissioning has to be done before the machines restart • Risks / impact if not during LS1 • Problem receiving user permits → Problem for Machine Protection • Time period • Before August 2014 • Manpower • Christophe and Spyros • Contributions from the other groups • All equipment systems who will make changes • Potential showstoppers • Late information about the modification of a user system • It implies the participation of people from each user system
– BIS and SMP : Individual Test Systems (#11658 and #11659) • Description of the activity • Individual System Test for the BIS and SMP system prior to beam operation • It regroups pre-operational checks and automatic CIBU tests • Why during LS1? • The tests have to be defined and performed before the machines restart • Risks / impact if not during LS1 • Malfunction of BIS or SMP (with all the consequences) • Time period • Before August 2014 • Manpower • Stéphane and Christophe • Review and transmit specs to MS • Contributions from the other groups • None • Potential showstoppers • BIS new hardware / new VHDL / new FESA class…
– BIS Collaboration : LBDS improvement (#12054) • Description of the activity • Connect the LHC BIS to the LBDS re-triggering system (so called 3rd channel). • This channel is directly connected to the LBDS to provoke asynchronous dump in case the TSU doesn’t trigger the expected synchronous beam dump • It implies a new CIBG card (Beam Permit Loop Generator) • The CIBG 3rd channel should reach a high availability level • Why during LS1? • It has to be done for the restart of the LHC • Risks / impact if not during LS1 • Beam potentially not dumped → Pbfor Machine Protection • Time period • Before August 2014 • Manpower • Stéphane • MS: Follow-up for FESA, Java GUI and PM data integration • Collaboration for the other groups • TE-ABT • Potential showstoppers • None Asynchronous DumpingS Beam permit loops
– BIS : Specification of BIS v2 • Description of the activity • Specify the functionalities and hardware for the BIS version2 • It will be developed between LS1 and LS2, and installed during LS2 • Why during LS1? • Dedicate enough time for a well defined specification • Risks / impact if not during LS1 • Delay on the BIS2 project • Time period • none • Manpower • Stéphane • Contributions from the other groups • None • Potential showstoppers • None
