Chapter 4 Vocab • Weather • Climate • Microclimate • Greenhouse Effect • Niche • Symbiosis • Mutualism • Parasitism • Commensalism • Photic Zone • Aphotic Zone
Climate • Whether – day to day activity • Climate – average conditions over long periods of time
Climate • What affects the climate? • Solar energy trapped in the biosphere • Latitude • Transport of heat • Bill Nye
Greenhouse Effect • Carbon Dioxide • Methane • Water Vapor • All gases found in the atmosphere
Greenhouse Effect • Allow visible light to enter • Traps heat • Without Greenhouse gases, the earth would be about 30 degrees Celcius cooler than it is today
Niche • Every species can survive and reproduce under certain circumstances, known as tolerance • What would you consider to be humans tolerance? • What happens when a species experiences stress from their environment?
Niche • A niche explains to biologists how an organism interacts with biotic and abiotic factors • The range of conditions an organism operates in and the way a species obtains what it needs to survive. • Examples of niches? • Amphibians living in moist places to absorb water through their skin
Competitive Exclusion Principle • 2 species can’t occupy the exact same niche at the exact same time in the exact same habitat
Symbiosis • When 2 species live close together • Mutualism • Both benefit from relationship • Clown fish • Parasitism • One organism lives inside another, taking its food and nutrients • Tapeworms • Commensalism • One organism is helped and the other is neither helped nor harmed • Barnacles on a whale • Barnacles are helped from the constant moving of water, but the whale is not helped
Water Depth • Photic Zone • Sunlit region near the surface where photosynthesis can occur • Possibly 200 meters in clear, tropical seas • Maybe just a few feet in swamps and ponds • Aphotic Zone • Below the photic zone, where photosynthesis does not occur
Benthic Zone • The zone comprised of sediments and rocks on the bottom of lakes, streams, and oceans • Animals living here are called the “Benthos” • In places where the water is shallow and may be exposed to light there are algae and aquatic plants • If it is not shallow, chemosynthetic organisms are the primary producers
Freshwater Ecosystems • Only 3 percent of earths surface water is fresh • Rivers and Streams • Lakes and Ponds • Freshwater Wetlands
Intertidal Zone • Organisms are submerged at high tide, and exposed during low tide. • Regular and extreme temperatures for the animals • Battered by waves, and currents • Barnacles, and plant life secure themselves to rocks to protect themselves from harsh conditions.
