  4. Opium War • Britain traded opium (heroin) grown in India for Chinese tea • Addiction • disrupted China’s economy • Chinese gov. tried to outlaw the opium trade • Britain insisted on free trade • Opium War • Chinese were easily defeated

  6. The Taiping Rebellion 1850-1864 • Chinese officials neglected their citizens and spent tons of money/raised taxes • Peasants revolted (largest revolt in history) • Chinese officials turned to foreigners for help in putting down the rebellion (20-30 million died)
