Renaissance • Age of recovery (from plague, political instability and a decline in church power) • High regard for human worth… “men can do all things if they will” – Alberti • A well rounded person could achieve things in many different areas *EXAMPLE* Leonardo da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, architect, inventor and mathematician.
The Italian States • Italy failed to develop a centralized state • There was no strong ruler so city states in northern Italy remained independent • Milan was the center of trade and one of the richest city-states in Italy • Venice acted as a link between Asia and Western Europe • Florence was the cultural center of Italy • Milan • Venice • Florence
Italian Wars • Powerful monarchs were attracted to Italy’s wealth and riches • France entered and occupied southern Italy (Naples) and the northern states asked Spain to help them… so over a span of 30 years the French and Spanish fought to dominate the country • The Spanish ransacked Rome and eventually became the dominating army in Italy
Machiavelli • Was a philosopher and writer. His most influential work was The Prince. The book discusses how to acquire and keep political power. • Most people believed that to keep political power, a prince must be a good moral Christian. Machiavelli disagreed. He thought that a ruler must act on behalf of the state regardless of if it conflicted with his conscience.
Society • Society was divided into three social classes ~ Nobility ~Townspeople (Merchants) ~Peasants
Family and Marriage • Family was a source of security • Parents carefully arranged marriages to strengthen business or family ties… these marriages were arranged typically when the child was only 2 or 3 years old • The contract included a dowry… this means that the wife’s family had to pay the husband upon marriage.
