What were the values and perspectives which characterized the Renaissance? • The feudal system was replaced by strong monarchies. • Italy was the birth place of the Renaissance (approx 14th century). • The main points in the Renaissance were in Literature, Philosophy, politics, religion, art, science and technology.
What caused the Reformation? • They changed the Church to make it more simple. Many people were upset because: • The Church spent lots of money on lavish churches. • Church sold indulgences to fund the building of cathedrals. • By the 16th century the letters were sold to free souls from purgatory.
What elements characterized the Counter-Reformation? • Loyola ( general) created “Soldiers of Christ” (army). • The Catholics killed Protestants because they didn't have the same beliefs has them, this was called witch hunting. • Citizens believed that the Devil was to blame for the religious arguments. • Many women were accused of witchcraft. • Society outcasts, the isolated, the poor and the mentally unstable were the main victims of persecution. • Witch hunting was at it's strongest in Germany, Switzerland and France. There were more religious disagreements in these areas.
