Sunday 3/9 Do Now • What are some of the major changes Napoleon made France in terms of politics?
Sunday 3/9 – Napoleon Creates An Empire • Napoleon gives up French Colonies in Northern America-American Revolution: French Colonists in Saint Domingo demanded same rights as French.-Slaves also wanted freedom • Toussaint L’Ouverture led slaves and took over colony. • 1801 – Napoleon wants to retake colony but was defeated because rebels were strong fighters and disease killed many French Soldiers.
Sunday 3/9 – Napoleon Creates An Empire • Napoleon cuts his losses and sells French territories to U.S. for 15 million.1. Money for France2. Punish British (revenge) • Now Focus on Europe- already controlled Austrian Netherlands and parts of Italy. • Britain, Russia, Sweden and Austria oppose France – fear of France’s power.

Monday 3/10 – Napoleon Creates an Empire • Battle of Trafalgar: one of the only battles lost-against Horatio Nelson and British-British navy defeated Napoleon • Represented the strength of the British navy • Stopped Napoleon’s plan to invade Britain.
Monday 3/10 – Napoleon Creates an Empire • Only free empires in Europe (from French) – Britain, Portugal, Sweden, Ottomans • All others were either:1. controlled by France2. controlled by family members of Napoleon3. had alliances with Napoleon
Monday 3/10 – Napoleon’s Mistakes • Continental System: idea to make continental Europe more self-sufficient as a way to hurt Britain.- Blockade: 1806 – closing of ports to prevent trade between Britain and other European Nations- many people smuggled goods or didn’t follow policy (including family/allies)
Monday 3/10 – Napoleon’s Mistakes • Britain creates own blockade- strong navy so able to implement- Search and Tax ships • 1812: Britain blocks American ships and Britain and America go to war.

Wednesday 3/12 – Napoleon’s Mistake 2. Peninsular War - Spain won’t agree to Continental System so Napoleon removes Spanish king and puts brother in throne. - Spanish fear this will weaken Catholic church (saw consequences of French Rev.) - guerillas: 6 years of attacks on French by small groups of people (ambush and flee into hiding) - 300,000 French killed
Wednesday 3/12 – Napoleon’s Mistakes 3. Russia 1812 - Alexander I refused to stop trade with Britain - Napoleon sent 420,000 to Russia - Russia retreats (uneven battle) - scorched-earth policy – burn grain fields and kill livestock so enemy will not have any food resources - destroy rather than surrender - only 10,000 French left
