Aztecs – Wealthy Empire Inland • Montezuma 2(Aztec Leader) believed Cortez was a God wearing armor • 1520 – Aztecs rebel because Spanish killed many chiefs and warriors during a religious ceremony Cortez and the Aztecs

Spain starts to travel north into the southwestern United States • 1513- Juan Ponce De Leon claims Florida for Spain • Little gold/wealth in southwestern United States so Spain sent mostly missionaries • Priests pushed for better treatment of Natives Spain expands empire
1542 – Encomienda system was abolished • Opposition from priests and natives • Priests did not like cruel treatment • Natives did not like religious pressures • 1680 – Pope- led a well organized rebellion that drove Spain back into Mexico for 12 years. Opposition to Spanish rule
