  2. Sunday 4/13 – do Now • Describe the effect agriculture and factors of production had in the production of goods. • INTRODUCE QUARTER 4 PROJECT – DUE THURSDAY MAY 1

  3. Sunday 4/13 – Business • As industrialization increases, corporations start to emerge. • Small businesses join together to make a bigger business. • Example: 1800’s – A few large companies owned 2/3 of railways in U.S.

  4. Sunday 4/13 – business • Stocks:rights of ownership • Corporations: business owned by stockholders who share the profit but are not personally responsible for the debt. • Examples: Standard Oil owned by RockefellerCarnegie Steel owned by Andrew Carnegie • Goal was the own every aspect of the industry

  10. Tuesday 4/15 Rise of Socialism • Utilitarianism • Jeremy Bentham • People should judge ideas, instructions and actions based on utility (usefulness) • Government should promote greatest number of good for greatest number of people.

Wednesday 4/16 – Communism • Karl Marx • Marxism – Radical Socialism • Wrote Communist Manifesto with Friedrich Engels • Division: “Haves” and “Have-nots” • Wealthy control production while poor provide backbreaking labor • Capitalism would destroy itself because large companies would drive out small and only a few people would control all of the wealth • Eventually the workers would revolt and take control of factories and profit leading to equality

Wednesday 4/16 – Communism • Communism • Complete socialism • All means of production (land, mines, transportation, businesses) were owned by the people • Everything was shared equally • Problem: Economics not the only factor in society (also have race, religion, politics) • Why does communism fail? Incentive

  17. Thursday 4/17 - Unions • Union: voluntary labor association to make change • make negotiations between worker and employer over pay, working conditions, etc. • Strike: refusal to work

Did this stop people? • What were the main goals of unions? • What are 3 reform laws and what was there significance? • In what ways did reform laws spread beyond factories? • What are the 3 views on slave labor? • Why did women lead reforms movements? • Who was Horace Mann and Alexis de Tocqueville and why were they important?
