  9. A country experiences an industrial revolution when it becomes mechanized and moves from an agricultural based society to a manufacturing one. This leads to urbanization, or the moving of people from farms in the country to work in factories in the cities. Industrial revolutions have come to different countries and parts of the world at different times. The industrial revolution came to America after England and other parts of Europe. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  10. Industrial revolutions have come to different countries and parts of the world at different times. The industrial revolution came to America after England and other parts of Europe. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  11. The first industrial revolution, beginning about 1760 happened in England because of three things: Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  12. First in England because…1. England had many natural resources including coal and iron.2. England had plenty of rivers to use as power to run machines.3. England had colonies around the world to supply it with raw materials like cotton, flax and wool. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  13. First in England because…1. England had many natural resources including coal and iron.Coal would be burned to fuel steam engines. Iron would be used to make the machines. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  14. First in England because…2. England had plenty of rivers to provide power to run machines.Flowing rivers turned water wheels connected to grinding and spinning machines to make flour and thread for fabrics. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  15. First in England because…3. England had colonies around the world that provided it with raw materials like cotton, flax and wool. The colonies would send the raw materials to England. England would then make cloth to sell back to the colonies. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  16. Before the industrial revolution, most people in England lived in rural areas working on farms. There were many small villages, but only one big city, London. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  17. Before the industrial revolution, producers of fibers like wool, would send their fibers to homes who had a spinning wheel to turn the fibers into thread. The thread would then be taken to a home that had a loom to turn it into cloth. These are examples of cottage industries. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  18. What caused the industrial revolution was the invention of several new machines that made the production of textiles (cloth or fabric)much easier and faster. One of these new machines in one factory could out produce many small cottage producers. So the factories put the small cottage industries out of business. But the factories also created new jobs for many people. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  19. Factories created many new jobs. But factory owners were hiring very young children and women, forcing them to work very long hours, six days a week and paying them very little. Many of these jobs were dangerous working around the machines. Poor working conditions and low pay eventually led to the forming of workers unions. The unions were organized to represent the workers interests. They fought for better pay, safer working conditions and child labor laws prohibiting factory owners from hiring children that were too young. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  20. Poor working conditions and low pay for workers influenced the writer Charles Dickens. It also influenced Karl Marx and his ideas about economics. Both Dickens and Marx were supportive of workers. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  21. The textile industry was one of two industries that led the way in the industrial revolution. The second was the iron industry. Iron is a natural mineral that is mined from the earth. It is melted down and poured into molds to make parts for machines and building materials for things like bridges and rails for railroads. In 1825, the Stockton-to-Darlington passenger railroad line was opened in England. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  22. England had an abundance of iron and coal. Coal is also a natural resource, a fossil fuel, that is mined from the earth. Coal was burned to boil water to create steam. Steam can create a great amount of pressure used to power steam engines. These engines were used to power all kinds of machines from grain grinders to spinning machines in factories to make textiles. The steam engine was the one most important invention and the driving force of the industrial revolution. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  23. When the steam engine was first invented, it was used to power stationary machines like spinning mules in textile factories. Eventually, steam engines were used to power moving machines like locomotives to pull trains, steamboats and even steam powered automobiles. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  24. Before the industrial revolution, there were two social classes of people in England. A small number of people called aristocrats, held most of the wealth of the nation. These were very rich people who built mansions filled with art and treasures. Most of the people of England were of the lower class and were very poor. The building of factories led to urbanization . This created many jobs and the beginning of the working or middle class. It is called the middle class because they are in the middle between the wealthy and the lower class. Summation: Use your notes to write a paragraph summary of the Columbian Exchange.

  25. What were the reasons England had the first industrial revolution? What was the most important development of the industrial revolution? Give reasons why you think this was most important.
