  3. James I • King James was a devout Catholic • He believed in the Divine Right of Kings This means that Kings are Chosen by God to Rule over the people without question of their authority James did not rely upon Parliament to help him rule

  4. Charles I • Son of James • Believed in Divine Right • Defended the unpopular Church of England • Parliament passed the Petition of Right. • This document would force the King to give Parliament more control of the government. • The King’s power would be severely limited

  5. Charles makes a mistake • Charles signs the Petition of Right • However, he quickly realizes this meant losing power. He changes his mind. • He decides to arrest the members of Parliament who oppose him • Thousands of Puritan protestants flee England to go to America • The King and Parliament prepare for war.

  9. Oliver Cromwell • England is no longer a Monarchy • England is now run by Parliament. However, Oliver Cromwell soon becomes Dictator. • He enforces Puritan Protestantism • He outlaws gambling, dancing, and card playing • He Rids Parliament of all opposition

  10. Oliver • Cromwell has Charles I executed. • He outlaws the monarchy. He declares England to be a Republic • He then gets rid of Parliament and makes himself dictator of England. He calls himself “Lord Protector.”

  11. Return of the King • After tolerating Cromwell’s dictatorship, the people want the Monarchy back • Parliament invites Charles II to return to England as King. He had been hiding in Europe. • He returns but ne is forced to sign the Petition of Right and respect the Church of England. • He is sympathetic to Catholics

  12. James II arrives • Charles’ brother James II is a devout Catholic. He appoints Catholics to offices in the government. • He was forced to raise his daughters Mary and Ann as Protestants. • He raised his son as a Catholic • Parliament is afraid that another Catholic monarchy was looming in the future.

The Glorious Revolution • Parliament feared James II • Parliament invites James’ daughter Mary and her husband William to invade England and take the throne. • William and Mary take the throne in 1688. • Parliament makes them sign the English Bill of Rights to guarantee the rights of all people
