High Level Goals • Long term goals (3-5 years) • Qualify one student to attend ISEF from Oakland • Develop a network of 20-40 teachers committed to inquiry teaching, research and supporting student participation in science fairs (i.e. going public) • Short term goals (1-2 years) • Engage East Bay Green Corridor high school teachers (est. 10) and feeder middle schools committed to supporting student inquiry/research projects that culminate in science fair participation • Develop/assess model for comprehensive supports for students and leveraging of diverse resources (Ex: after school programs, family engagement) • Recruit community partners to support teacher/student teams and their area of focus
Objectives • Number of schools participating in county science fairs will increase • Student participation in affiliated schools increases 300% over a three-year period • Increased student awareness of STEM related careers and college/career pathways • Volunteers/mentors supporting each school site team • Inquiry and research taking place in and out of school, with communication/coordination of work across both settings • Resources for science fair participation secured for each site
Action Plan – Steps to Meet Your Goals and Objectives Note: Our region will be collaborating throughout the year with colleagues in region 3 and region 6 on all of the above.
Intel ISEF Educator Academy Reflection As a result of the 2012 Educator Academy, we…… • Obtained important insights into effective teaching/learning from Carl Weiman’s exceptional presentation. • Had time to network and strategize within and across regions (most beneficial element – THANK YOU!). • Beneficial shop talks: Intel resource review, flipped classroom, science research collaborative, thinking about data, creating a culture of research, and PHET. • Shop Talks missing: Models aligned with Wieman’s approach in which “experts” partner with teachers to bring content knowledge and expert thinking to teams. Ways of addressing accessibility for students from underserved communities. Building the pathways into science research in high schools (K-12 strategy).
