Why? • Before expansion: travels of Marco Polo • Fears of the Sea of Darkness with monsters • TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS - astrolabe; made it possible to determine the time of sunrise and sunset and the position of stars
Technical improvements.. • Compass; used in the Mediterranean from 12th c. onwards • A new type of ship: a Caravel: could ship unwind, travel long distances and had cabins and stowage for the food and drinks
GREED • People wanted to gain more and more • People were anxious to discover new areas • Renaissance and the growth of trade - new type of human being..
RELIGION • Desire to covert non-Christians • The Great Schism in the West ( 1378-1417)
OVERPOPULATION • ESPECIALLY in the Mediterranean and in the Iberian Peninsula more grain was needed to feed the population -the growth of population and the recovery of the economy after the Black Death
INTERNATIONAL TRADE CRISIS • Moslem´s intolerance; old trade routes were in trouble and Europe still needed spices, sugar, raw materials for the textile industry
