Project Connect 2 Teach Rebecca J. Speelman, Ed.D. York College of Pennsylvania Shared at the National Education Computing Conference 2009
Please join us as we embark down a path that I believe will "make the connections" to help guideour pre-service teachers to plan, instruct and assess our students as 21st century learners.
Background Philosophy • I believe integration has to start with the first introduction of a lesson plan, not as an add-on feature after we learn about content and pedagogy.
Key Points to Share 1. Vision and highlights 2. Historical information 3. Implementation planning 4. Outcomes/Examples
Vision • To connect pre-service teacher candidates with in-service teachers in order to bridge the gap between theory and practice when working with curriculum and technology. • To provide in-service teachers with resources to assist planning and pre-service teacher candidates a glimpse of their future lives as teachers.
Highlights • 228 students (primarily sophomore level students) • 218 teachers • 8 states • K-12 • Focused on state, national and NETS-T standards • Over 2,950 standards-aligned , teacher reviewed web resources now available
Implementation Planning • Previous semester • Field Experience Coordinator (contact for Alumni) • District Contacts • superintendent, director of C&I, building level principals, teachers • Two weeks prior to start of course • Student contact request for placement • Grade level, content area, extenuating circumstances
Implementation Planning • One week prior to start of course • Overview of project sent to student for review • First day of semester • Guidelines for contact • Students make initial contact with PC2T teacher
Outcomes • Lesson/unit development • Student journaling • PC2T teacher survey (quantitative and qualitative) • Web resource review and alignment by PC2T teacher • Lesson/unit review by course instructor • Student understanding of beginning with the end in mind
“Curriculum drives technology; technology should not drive curriculum!”
