  1. AEMO 100% Renewables Study 28 September 2012 Assumptions and input forum

  2. Outline of the day • This morning • Context, scope of the study (DCCEE) • AEMO’s approach • Questions from the floor • Demand-side assumptions (AEMO) • After the break • Supply-side assumptions (AEMO) • Questions from the floor • Next steps (AEMO) • Where to from here (DCCEE)

  3. Purpose of the study • Part of the Government’s Clean Energy Future Plan • The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) tasked with expanding its planning scenarios • … to prepare for greater use of renewable energy

  4. Scope of the study The modelling will investigate: • scenarios for a 100 per cent renewable electricity supply at 2030 and 2050; • generation plant and major transmission networks required to support each scenario; • the estimated capital cost requirements; and • an estimate of the impact on customer energy prices.

  5. Broader context National Electricity Market • Over $10 billion of electricity traded annually • Network asset values >$55bnwith investment of ~$8bn annually • Major undertaking to consider a 100% Renewables mix • This is the first step Source: AEMO 2010

  6. Where this study fits ? 2030 2050 It does not consider how we might get there… … or what an alternative world might look like… …these are some of the other pieces of the puzzle. Feasibility Feasibility Resources Resources Total cost Total cost Relative cost Relative cost ? ? Transition path Transition path ? ? What might a ‘100% Renewables’ future look like? ? ?
