Awareness and Revolution Issues of the 21st Century What we’re doing to solve them What you can do about them
Overpopulation • United Nations estimated we will be 9.2 billion on the planet by mid century • Many countries force people to have fewer children and limit immigration • Debate on the carrying capacity of the Earth • Is the distribution of wealth fair?
Gay Rights • Same sex marriage is legalized in many placed, but outlawed in others • Uganda has toughened its laws against any homosexual behaviour
Poverty • Root cause of famine, disease, and insufficient education in much of the world • Is self-reinforcing • Being poor means getting a bad education, so you get a bad job. You have kids and are poor, and so they cannot get a good education, so they get bad jobs...
Disease • AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis each kill over a million people every year • SARS, Ebola and the flu are causing concern • HIV remains without a cure and is spreading through India and much of the African continent • Outbreaks of various diseases occur throughout the world
Global warming • Scientists have said that the Earth is going through human induced global warming • This will result in losses of biodiversity and ecosystems
Fossil fuels • Scarce and more expensive due to high demand • Discovery of new oil fields has not been sufficient to sustain the current demand • Is the Earth running out of fuel? • Are there alternatives to fuel?
Reflection (part 1) • Reflect on some of these issues • Do these issues connect to your life in any way? • What do you think about these issues? • Are these real problems or insignificant ones? • Do you think these problems can be solved?
Reflect on some of these solutions • Do these solutions seem possible for you to take part in? • What do you think about these solutions? • Will these solutions solve the current problems? • Do you think there’s a better solution that exists for some of these problems?
What do you think this means? Be the change you want to see in the world. Gandhi

Why or why not?) • Describe the solution • Describe how it helps solve the issue • Tell me what you think about it (Does it work? Why or why not?) This project is individual!
Mini Project November 24th • Poster-type project • Present on 8 1/2”x14” paper • Include necessary content and images (minimum 2) • Be creative! • These will be put up in the classroom so make sure your posters are presentable It is not a problem if more than one person picks the same solutions to the same issues, as long as they are presented and explained differently. Remember to state your sources. Plagiarism is not tolerated.
