KERALA AGRICULTURE - AN OVERVIEW Total geographical area - 38,85,497 ha Forests - 10,81,509 ha Land put to non-Agri use - 3,93,341 ha Barren & uncultivable land - 29,580 ha Permanent pastures and others - 263 ha Land under misc.Tree crops - 13,022 ha Fallow other than current fallow - 39,181 ha Current fallow - 70,798 ha Cultivable waste - 69,226 ha Net sown area - 21,88,537 ha Total cropped area - 29,70,384 ha 2

SPECIAL FEATURES • Predominance of Small & Marginal Farmers 98% • Average size of operational holdings. 0.33 ha • Cropped area under perennial crops. 86% • Coconut occupy 41 % of the net cropped area & support 3.5 million families. • Plantation crops of rubber,tea,coffee &cardamom occupy 28% of the net cropped area . • 1.4 million family depend on plantation sector. • High cost of production • Rich biodiversity with advantageous global competitiveness • Export oriented crops-high value crops (Cashew,coffee,cardamom,pepper) Rs.1365.47 Cr 3

Steps to Improve Productivity– 2005(Contd…) Group Farming • Objective • To sustain rice cultivation • To augment average productivity (>2.8 MT/ha) • Employment generation • Reduce cost of cultivation • Through farmer’s Self Help Groups • Area proposed to be covered – 1.059 Lakh ha • Districts covered – Trivandrum, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram • Groups formed - 1800 Nos (appx.) • Assistance to be given – Rs 1000/ha • Activities • Mechanisation – Land preparation, Harvesting, Cultural operation etc., • Use of uniform seed of High Yielding Varieties • Community weed control • Joint plant protection measures • Organising Seminars and melas 19

  27. Readiness to implement ATMA • State level orientation work shop conducted • ATMA would be implemented in five districts in the 1st phase • Training of Master trainers has been completed 27

Quarantine Facilities • Prof. & Head, Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, Vellayani – Authorised to issue PEQ Certificate. • Joint Director of Agriculture (PP) – Notified Phytosanitary Certificate issuing authority. • Certification not yet started due to lack of infrastructure facilities. 28
