Sculpture • the art of making two- or three-dimensional representative or abstract forms (Most sculpture is three-dimensional) • Two-dimensional sculpture- are part of a flat surface, such as a relief, or carvings on the surface of pottery. • Three-dimensional sculpture- art that involves shaping a medium or mediums, such as molding clay, carving wood, welding metal or chiseling marble • Representative (Realistic)– is representational artwork aims to represent actual objects or subjects from reality • Abstract -Uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world

11. Elements and Principles of Art that will be used in your sculpture piece • Line: One-dimensional, and is used in sculpture to lead the viewers eye in, around, and through a form. Can be actual of implied. • Value: A highlight or shadow on the surface of a sculpture, meant to create interest through contrast. Deeply carved areas have dark shadowed values, areas that stick out have highlighted values. Texture creates it. • Emphasis: Occurs any time an element stands out in order to draw the viewers eye there first. • Color: Comes from all primaries (RYB) and black and white. Primary Color s– Red, Yellow and Blue. Secondary Colors – Orange , Green and Purple. Color has three properties: Hue, Value and intensity. Color Enhances your work. Color can be applied (such as painted on) or inherent (such as the natural color of stone). Can be used to enhance the theme or meaning within a work of art. • Texture: A repetitive mark on the surface of a sculpture, meant to create interest through contrast. Deeply textured areas appear darker and smoother, non-textured areas appear lighter. • Form: A 3D object, has height, width, and depth. Every sculpture is a form, but every form isn't a sculpture. • * Plane: A two-dimensional surface, has height and width. Can be used to define edges, or to change the "flow" of a sculpture. Has no depth. • Balance: Can be the equal physical and/or visual weight on all sides of a piece. Can be symmetrical (same on all sides) or asymmetrical (different on each side, but still visually balanced). - Symmetrical: (Formal) The most stable in a visual sense. A mirror image, can be horizontally, vertically, or diagonally mirrored. - Asymmetrical: (Informal) Occurs when elements are placed unevenly in a piece.

12. Your Assignment • Come up with three sketches one based on opposites, one combining two animals and one of your choice • Chose two dimensional or three dimensional for both • Fill out the worksheet and begin your sketches • Each of you three sketches should be on separate pages in your sketchbook. All sketches must include a front view, side view and top view of your sculpture • Each sketch must be colored/shaded and add detail. Take your time. • Bring in materials you want to use for your sculpture (Wire, Styrofoam, buttons, beads, toothpicks etc.) – Place in a grocery bag inside your cubby with your name in sharpie on the bag. • I will provide some materials for you - cardboard, foil, scissors, hot glue, glue guns and more.
