GIS and water consumption information is being used in Water Court Cases. This is a GIS for irrigated fields in a Natural Resources District in central Idaho. The Presentation was by Dr. Dave Tuthill, Director of the Idaho Department of Water Resources. This was a lawsuit by the owners of fields that are outlined by GIS polygons. They claimed that other surrounding NRDs were taking their ground-water and that these fields were therefore water short.
GIS and Evapotranspiration from Landsat and METRIC process (shown in this slide for the same polygons) was used to show that these fields, on average, were NOT water short. The Idaho Supreme Court therefore ruled against these water users (those outlined by the GIS polygons).
