Site License Advisory Team January 31, 2014 meeting
Agenda • Update to distribution process: KB article links • Adobe and other Graphic Design Products • Adobe Maintenance Options • Microsoft SQL • JMP renewal • Red Hat Enterprise License Overview • GIS/ESRI Products • Renewals: • SAS/Sigmaplot/Maple • JMP • OCIO Vendor Tech Fair • Upcoming upgrades
Distribution Update: KB Articles • SLS Support has begun a knowledge-building campaign within the OCIO ITSD Knowledgebase • Added or updated approximately 70 articles • Begun the process of creating “master articles” that link all knowledge to a single location • Increasing the visibility of these articles as part of the distribution process
Distribution Update: KB Articles • The IT Service Desk and SLS Support teams have found a common distribution issue: “readme” files are not being read. • We have begun putting a link to installation instructions directly into the download/codes mailing • Complicated distributions include detailed articles, e.g. MATLAB
Adobe • Adobe brought a new pricing option to the table in early January. • Pricing is lower, better in line with our needs • Would include 100% of OSU-owned machines Acrobat, 35% for Creative Cloud • Includes “Home Use” licenses for Fac/Staff at $10/year • Still no better price for students • No perpetual licenses, no virtualization, no concurrent usage
Adobe Maintenance • Some areas are looking to do large CC purchases • For CS6 copies that were under maintenance, we may have an option for upgrading at no charge until early 2015 • We are pending information from Adobe on this
Corel • The Corel offer for their Creative suite was finalized by MHEC. • Pricing has come down a bit, so the deal has gotten better • Considering it as an alternative option to Adobe, particularly if student pricing remains high.
Microsoft SQL Server • Microsoft has made an offer of approximately $400k to license the entire University starting July 1, to co-term with our Campus Agreement • Cost is approximately $6/FTE (faculty, staff, and students) • The University has reached a tipping point where licensing it for everyone will be cheaper than licensing it based on individual departmental need going forward.
Red Hat Enterprise License • OCIO has a Red Hat Enterprise License (REL) that covers all of OSU, including students • OCIO is not yet prepared for full distribution • We can provide some access on a case-by-case basis • The MedCenter is included until June 30, and we are examining how to include them going forward
GIS/ESRI Products • Center for Mapping currently distributes this product • Their support is ending • OCIO Site Licensing and Physical Planning and Real Estate are examining how to contribute distribution
JMP Renewal • JMP • Renewal codes now available (old codes hard fail March 1, 2014) • JMP 11 is part of our renewal • OCIO is testing JMP 11, but may not roll out until 11.1 becomes available (adds support for Mac OS 10.9); expected availability in the next couple of weeks
Completed Renewals • SAS • Renewals began 9/1 with new codes; codes hard-failed on 12/31 if they weren’t updated • Distribution Update • SAS 9.4 remains very large. • USB drive duplication will go into effect next month for problem distributions • Sigmaplot • Renewed, new codes available via self-service • Maple • Renewed, no new codes required
OCIO IT Expo • Date: March 27th from 9 to 4 • Location: Union at the Great Hall Meeting Room. • There will be presenters, and the list of what who they are is on the website and more info what they will show and what times. More info can be found at u.osu.edu/VendorITExpo
Questions/Comments • Next meeting Feb. 28, 2014, 10 AM • OCIO has a conference room in the basement of Enarson we may try and use. • Other options?
