  4. The Road to Civil War 2) Parliament is called by the king in Nov 1640 “Long Parliament” they refuse and begin a plan to get rid of the king. 1) Charles I advised by his right hand man: Lord Strafford, engage in Bishop’s War in 1640 King is left bankrupt. 3) 1641 Parliament begins a series of political reforms to reduce the power of the King  charge Strafford with treason and is executed. 4) 1642 Parliament presents Grand Remonstrance: document that shows Charles’ actions as king

  5. The Road to Civil War 6) Angers Parliament and both sides begin to prepare for war. 5) 1642: Charles enters Parliament and attempts to arrest 5 members of Parliament but fails.

  6. Civil War: Support Parliament or the King? Royalists or Cavaliers Roundheads Supported Parliament Local militia: farmers and townspeople. Little experience but had $ By 1645 called the New Model Army: led by Oliver Cromwell • Charles I supporters. • From noble families • Foot soldiers and part of the Royalist Army

  7. Battle of Naseby • Royalists defeated on June 14th 1645. • Charles I fled to Scotland  was captured by the Scottish army and handed over to Parliament.

Rump Parliament • After the final battle Parliament was divided: some wanted the King to return with limited powers vs. some wanted to end the monarchy • Many “moderates” left Parliament and Puritans were left  Rump Parliament  charged the King with treason and put him on trial for his life.

  9. Trial of Charles I • Charles I refused to please guilty or not guilty. • As King  how could they legally bring him to trial? • Found guilty and sentenced to death in 1649.
