Ending the Civil War • The Civil War ended in 1649 • When Charles’ armies were defeated (by whom?) Charles fled to Scotland • He was taken as a prisoner, brought back to England, and tried for TREASON!
The Trial of the King • Revolutionary! • Treason: the act of trying to overthrow the king • So Charles was on trial for trying to overthrow himself! • The penalty was DEATH
The Trial of the King • Charles wanted to die with dignity – he wore his finest clothes and ate a full breakfast • On the day of his execution, Charles gave a short speech and then was beheaded • Pictures: p. 37 and p.38
The Triumph of Parliament • Technically, according to English law and ancient right, Charles’ son would be King • The Rump Parliament voted to abolish the monarchy and the House of Lords (which is what established the “Commonwealth” we have today!) • By this time, the Rump Parliament was about 60 people • Eventually Cromwell lost patience with the Rump Parliament (which he thought couldn’t govern properly) • When the parliament refused to hold an election, Cromwell marched in and drove out the member!
