LBT Q4 2008 Engineering and Software Review ENGG Engineering General
Highlights (Q4/2008) • LFBG rotator continues to work well – mostly • LDG rotator design and fabrication is essentially on schedule • Installation of LDG rotator access platforms and cabling begins now • HBS identified as the largest contributor to open-loop tracking errors • HBS thermal control has been greatly improved • Open loop tracking improved from 350mas to 100mas • MCS slew performance greatly improved • Identified and corrected several MCS bugs • LSST-LBT collaborating on hardpoint development LBT Q4 2008 Engineering and Software Review
Progress (Q4/2008) • Complete bulk of DG rotator and cable chain design (some details will spill over into Q1/09) √ • Address all LFBG rotator and cable chain commissioning action items (some remain) • Complete “super hardpoint” conceptual design √ • Hold a review of the “super hardpoint” design (not yet) • Build a prototype “super hardpoint” with mechanics and electronics (not yet) • PMCD review (handover late in Q4/08 or early Q1/09) √ • Install and tune all HBS capillaries (some done, temp control higher priority) • Implement a new vibration monitoring system √ • Understand the source of the Gregorian vibration (some modest progress) • Develop and test a prototype of a new shutter latching mechanism (some progress) • Make several MCS - DSP/FPGA improvements (continue into Q1/09) √ • DYB documentation review (LBT reviewing documentation) • DYB handover (depends on ETS resources) (LBT reviewing documentation) • Fill open EE position (reposting with revised description) LBT Q4 2008 Engineering and Software Review
Open Issues • Technical • Gregorian vibration • PMC – hp performance • HBS – reliability / performance / completeness • M3 – reliability (some progress) • MCS – much more work necessary to complete this system • ROT – more spares necessary • Schedule • So many subsystems / so little commissioning time • Telescope schedule increasingly competitive • DG rotator schedule has no contingency • Financial • `09 budget is tight • Resource • Group work load high • Loosing our Commissioning Engineer (Jonathan) • Open EE position • Resources may be insufficient to commission all subsystems on the current timetable LBT Q4 2008 Engineering and Software Review
Planning (Q1/2009) • Install the LFBG instrument rotator and cable chain • Address remaining LFBG rotator and cable chain commissioning action items • Hold a review of the “super hardpoint” design • Complete “super hardpoint” detailed design • Build a prototype “super hardpoint” with mechanics and electronics • Conclude PMCD project • More HBS work: capillaries, thermal, reduce friction and planning for controls upgrades • Understand the source of the Gregorian vibration • Install and test the prototype of a new shutter latching mechanism • MCS testing and controls software upgrades • Review DYB documentation • DYB handover • Fill open EE position • Prepare for a new baby LBT Q4 2008 Engineering and Software Review
