PIP Report 3 L2 tasks 9 L3 tasks 31 L4 tasks 30% Linac 70% Booster Ongoing Complete F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Linac 200 MHz RF Power System • Modulator Upgrade • 35kV, Marx-topology modulator • Progress made on various fronts • Enclosure design complete and near delivery • Gate driver circuit board design/layout done • Short circuit testing continues • Successful designand tests, with available end-of-year funds procure the long-lead items for the full voltage modulator • HLRF – SBK201 • Successful CDR review early July • Focus now shifted to drafting & purchase of long-lead items F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Linac Accelerator Physics • Laser Notch • Internal review carried out early August • Readiness for vacuum cavity / optical cavity installation during shutdown Assembly at lab area Assembly installed RIL beam Laser port F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Linac Utilities Original L1 sub-station • Power distribution (Dec’11-Sept’14) • L1 transformer fully installed • 13.8kV to 480Y/277V • Better heat loss (80C vs 115C) • Low voltage breakers, trip control and instr. • What will become of the removed equipment? • Transformer will be kept as sparefor Linac • additional 2 other old-style transformers in use • Breakers & primary switch will be rebuilt and tested – spares L4 task complete! July’14 Sept 24 ‘14 Sept 17 ‘14 F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Linac Utilities • LCW system • Dual temp. system • Replace cooling provided by EOL DTW piping and fan coil units to a rooftop AC unit • Contract awarded and pre-meeting conducted • Gallery work starts Oct10th • CUB 55 LCW backup pump • Extensive delay • Overran in costs forced the project to be restructure to a FP rather T&M • Process complete in time for the shutdown • Job still has not started! • Vacuum upgrade • Turbo pumps (shutdown’14) • Original pumps in service since day-one • Belt driven / oil reservoir • Heavy, big, replacement parts no longer available • New pumps are sealed clean bearings, compact, high speed, freq. drive control L4 task complete! F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Booster RF Anode & Bias Supplies • Anode Supplies • Goal: install both supplies during shutdown 2014 • Delays in the delivery of long lead items prevented this task to be complete • AD/EE continue to make progress with assembly • Supplies may be built but not tested by the end of the shutdown • Await for opportunistic shutdown next year to install • Bias Supplies • Scope of work:Replace transformers, re-plumbing and re-wiring for 15 Hz operation Current Situation East gallery: 100% complete West gallery: 10% complete F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Booster RF Cavity & Tuner Refurbishment • Work progressing well with the cavity refurbishment • Scope of work: refurbish all 19 cavities in Booster • Up to now, 11 cavities fully refurbished and re-installed in tunnel • Additional cavity (#20) installed prior the shutdown • Cavity built from leftover parts Current Situation • Cones are bottleneck • Time consuming to rework a used cone • 10 step process F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Booster Notch system • Scope of Work: Reconfigure and replace notch kickers & corresponding high voltage system for faster rise/fall time 3 bucket notch Current Situation • Complete installation of • 6 “short” kicker magnets & corresponding high voltage system • redesigned S12 spool piece • improve aperture at downstream of notch kickers (~10%) • standard Booster BPM’s pickup plates proved to be aperture restriction Short kickers beam F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Booster Radiation Shielding • Scope of Work: Revised Booster shielding assessment to allow high intensity operations. • Present SAD allows for 1.8E17 p/hr • Above ground radiation protection • Practical limit determined by the array of detectors spread around the ring • 50+ interlocked detectors placed above ground at specific locations covering all loss points • Tunnel radiation protection • Overall loss rate limited by the “watt meter” – 525W & • Local control loss possible with array of 60+ BLMs along the tunnel • During the shutdown, 8 TLM’s installed in Booster tunnel • High loss points: Injection, extraction, collimator, notch regions • Beam tests to characterize system F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Booster Utilities • Power distribution • Transformers • First transformer replaced 09/27 (west side) • Problems with the breaker will prevent the installation on the east side this shutdown • Vacuum upgrades • Turbo pumps • All pumps on-hand • Auxiliary cables and relay rack work moving along • Pump installation progressing well • Unlikely to complete this shutdown BWG - transformer F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP PIP-II adjustments Meetings and discussions began to adjust PIP to PIP-II F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 10/06/2014
PIP - Conclusions • PIP continues to make positive progress towards its goals • Linac • Lots of progress made on the 200 MHz RF system • First step completion of R&D project to create a notch within linac beam pulse using laser system • Completion of two L4 tasks during shutdown 2014 • Vacuum system • Power Distribution • Booster • >50% cavities refurbishment complete • Complete installation of BW house transformer • Setup complete for TLM’s beam tests run • Complete installation of short kicker magnets for notch creation • PIP plan adjustments for PIP-II • Discussions started between PIP and PIP-II to redirect and modify existing PIP activities to line up with PIP-II program F.G.
