  1. All Experimenters MeetingPIP Report Fernanda G. Garcia on behalf of PIP team 07/01/2013

  2. RFQ Injector Line (RIL)

  3. RILHighlights – Thin corrector Thin corrector • Large exit angle • Correctors are running with high current, predominant vertically, at the downstream end of RFQ in order to maximize beam transmission • Thanks to BNL for the design and FNAL/TD for building the correctors • Corrector installed early June • Modest gain in beam current • Increased extractor voltage by 1.5kV • Yielded 11% more beam at entrance of Linac Contribution: C.Y. Tan F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 07/01/2013

  4. RILHighlights – Source Swap • FNAL/RIL design posses two sources located side-by-side on a slide platform to allow for easy and quick swap • First swap: June 17 • Duration: ~ 7 hrs • Second swap: June 26 • Duration: ~1hr Contribution: D. Bollinger F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 07/01/2013

  5. PIP – Linac Activities

  6. Linac200 MHz RF Power System • Modulator Upgrade • 35kV, Marx-topology modulator to drive triode (or MBK) • SLAC – Two cell test stand • Simulate the ripple due for 2 cells both in phase (11%) and out of phase (0.9%) • Compare 2 cell out-of-phase simulated to measured ripple (1.1%) • Determine via simulation the ripple for 5 vernier cells (0.23%) F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 07/01/2013

  7. Linac200 MHz RF Power System • Modulator Upgrade (cont.) • 35kV, Marx-topology modulator to drive triode (or MBK) • AD/EE – Working on building 9 cell Marx Modulator • Able to create any arbitrary wave shape, from trapezoid to square • In the future: determine rising and falling edge ripple • Built prototype discrete control system • Testing second prototype Marx cell • under normal load conditions (350 Amps) • under short circuit (2000 Amps) • Continue fabrication of 9 cell Marx Modulator F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 07/01/2013

  8. Linac200 MHz RF Power System • MBK201FERMI • 7MW pulsed klystron to operate at 200 MHz for use as a power source for the DTL Linac • Procurement • Received approval from directorate to proceed with the MBK201 prototype • New cost/schedule was developed between Fermi and seller • Current awaiting PO to be accepted • Estimate to be complete this week • Activities • Initiate gallery floor plan layout in collaboration with AD/MSD Drafter Dept. Courtesy: D. Hurd F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 07/01/2013

  9. LinacUtilities • Power Distribution • L1 transformer • Continue with prep work for the installation of L1 transformer. • Electrical conduit relocation complete • Lead abatement & relocation steel beam complete Hatch location Tentative delivery date: Week July 15th. F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 07/01/2013

  10. LinacLaser Notcher • Reduce losses in Booster generated by the creation of the notch • 3D printer model of the vacuum interface and the optical cavity • Good progress with beam shaping optics Design beam size 1 mm x 6 mm Horizontal Beam size as shown ~ ¾ mm x 5 mm Vertical F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 07/01/2013

  11. PIP – Booster Activities

  12. BoosterUtilities Old Y-BE2 40+years old – beyond expected lifetime Oil-cooled transformer Questionable operation conditions for quite a while May/2012 investigation revealed noisy current output, over temperature operation conditions… Replaced with “old spare” ~ 1 year ago New Y-BE2 Installed May 17-18, 2013 Air-cooled transformer Remotely monitor & control Breakers are modular (smaller spare inventory) Improved monitoring (access to currents, voltages, harmonics ) F.G. Garcia AEM - PIP Report 07/01/2013

  13. Booster • Booster shielding assessment • Studies concerning beam loss profile and radiation measurement through penetrations were done • Discussions and data analysis underway • Booster Notcher • Progress with time in and commissioning 6 4.5 3 1.5 0 6 4.5 3 1.5 0 12T - $17 12T - $17 E12 E12 F.G. 14. BoosterRF system • Cavities Refurbishment • 7of 19 cavities have been refurbished BRF 1,3,5,6,7,8,15 • BRF11 has issues with heating on the tuners • Need to be re-addressed for 15 Hz operations Booster Cavity Work Refurbished (15Hz) SS Prototype SS Upgraded Cavity Removed Stats: Last refurbishment :9.4 weeks <refurb.>last 3 cav. : 10.5 weeks Courtesy: K.
